Best Natural Home Remedies by Bloggers: From People to Pets, There’s a Home Remedy for Everyone

I wish I could remember all of my grandmother’s "magic cures". She seemed to have a natural remedy for everything from coughs to sunburns. I recently passed on one of her secrets – honey for hiccups – and it made me wonder what family remedies other bloggers have shared on their blogs. I did a little searching and here are the best home remedies by bloggers I came across:

Tobacco for Bee and Wasp Stings – This is a remedy I’ve had the unfortunate experience of testing myself. It works, but it is disgusting. I don’t know why I was stung so many times as a kid- whether I was in a moving truck or playing in a pool, the bees would find me. I’ve tried everything from baking soda to ice and the only thing I’ve found to reduce the burning and swelling has been chewing tobacco. For some reason, the chewed tobacco works better than tobacco from a cigarette. I don’t know if it is the saliva or the tobacco, but this cure works. Thanks to Appalachian Folk for writing about this remedy.

Onions for Ant and Mosquito bites – Onions make a simple, natural remedy to remove the sting from insect bites. According to Nonchalant Mom, all you have to do is cut the onion and hold it on the bite for 10 minutes.

Gogol Mogol to Prevent Colds – An alternative to chicken soup, Gogol Mogol is supposed to soothe your throat and help relieve flu symptoms. Stephen Heyman from The Moment says this is a Jewish tradition and is made by vigorously beating egg yolks with sugar and adding hot milk.

Garlic for an Earache – Lara DeHaven from Texas says that she squeezes garlic in capsule form every time one of her children has an earache. She says it can also be used on the tonsils if they are inflamed. Courtesy of Texas Homesteader Blog.

Honey for Hiccups – I discussed this remedy in my Tweet for a Cure [DP1] blog post, but it is such as easy remedy I thought I would repeat it here. A spoonful of honey can make your hiccups go away.

Homemade Hair Treatments:

Baking Soda for Dry Scalp - Instead of using shampoo, Lara DeHaven massages baking soda into her scalp then rinses with warm water. For the hair away from the scalp, she pours two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar down the length of her hair. She says her hair has been so healthy and shiny, even her hair dresser commented that it was looking good. Courtesy of Texas Homesteader Blog.

Natural Conditioner – Combine 1 cup plain yogurt, ½ cup buttermilk, an egg yolk and a teaspoon of raw coconut oil and apply to hair. Let stand for 30 minutes before rinsing. – Found on Embracing My Past, Present and Future Life.

Natural Remedies for Pets:

De-Skunk Your Dog – I couldn’t imagine having a dog that was sprayed by a skunk, but if it happens, you need a safe and effective remedy, FAST. The Mark Maunder Blog had this remedy: Mix 1 quart of 3% hydrogen peroxide, a quarter cup of baking soda, and a tablespoon of liquid soap (the kind you do the dishes with). Rub the mixture all over your dog and let stand for four minutes (watch for irritation), then wash with normal shampoo. The last (but most important!) step: give your dog a little steak for being so patient.

Relieve Fire Ant Bites in Dogs with Listerine – A pet lover on an RV trip had a nasty run-in with fire ants that left her Chihuahua in bad shape. She had limited supplies in her camper and was a long way from anywhere, so she found the tip to use Listerine from the internet. After she poured Listerine on the pup, he quickly returned to normal and quit babying his bitten legs- and also had fresh breath. This is a great tip from Love Pets Forever Webblog.

These were my favorite home remedies found online, but I’m sure there are many more. Please leave a comment with your home remedy below.
